Certified Orofacial Myologists have specialty training in positive reinforcement techniques to modify and eliminate digit sucking and other noxious habits. The therapist serves as a third party to help children discontinue their habits in a POSITIVE and FUN environment.
Most children modify their habit after the FIRST visit, with weekly, then biweekly visits, until the habit is completely eliminated. A follow-up appointment is scheduled 3 months after completion of therapy. Most therapy is successful in 4-5 visits, however each child and situation is unique.
The best time to initiate treatment is age 5, when there is adequate development to understand the concepts of treatment. Also, it is important to pick a time in the child's life when there is not excessive stress or changes in their environment, ie, new home, new sibling, etc. Early treatment is desirable to minimize damage to the permanant teeth and jaws. However, therapy is also successful for older children, teenagers and adults.
The first step is to schedule a free consultation - with parents and child, to explain the positive approach and have the child make the decision to initiate therapy. Most children want to begin the first appointment, but is helpful to build up positive anticipation for the therapy.
