The decision to treat or not treat orofacial disorders should by made by a Certified Orofacial Myologist and coordinated with the referring doctor.

The IAOM (International Association of Orofacial Myology) is the only professional organization who trains and certifies professionals in this specialty. A degree in speech therapy, dentistry or dental hygiene is a prerequisite before training and certification. The website has very good information about orofacial myology, along with an extensive bibliograpy.  iaom.com

Certified Orofacial Myologists are trained to help patients eliminate sucking habits using positive behavior management techniques and have specialized training in tailoring the orofacial myofunctional therapy program to meet the needs of each patient.

Karen Samuel, founder of North Texas Orofacial Myology, is a Certified Orofacial Myologist and also offers IAOM approved beginning courses in Orofacial Myology.   She has an extensive background as both a clinician and educator in dental hygiene.  She offers several continuing education courses each year to the dental community.
